Getting There : Regional Express Airlines (REX) flies directly from Sydney and Melbourne to Merimbula more than five times each day.
The drive from Sydney via the Hume Highway (inland route) takes approximately five to five and a half hours. This route enjoys dual freeway from Sydney to Canberra and then wide, quiet, high-quality highway from Canberra to Merimbula via Cooma and Bega. The drive is also very scenic passing through snowgums, temperate rainforest and thick eucalyptus forest.
An alternate route is via the Princes Highway (coastal route), which takes approximately six hours and is approximately 450 kilometres. This drive is better if you intend on taking many stops and exploring all the coastal towns and villages between Sydney and Merimbula.
From Melbourne the drive to Merimbula takes approximately six to seven hours.
Merimbula has a lagoon, a lake and ocean beaches surrounded by white sand and unspoilt bushland, offering a vast array of activities.
Main Beach at Merimbula offers five kilometres from which to surf, fish or just stroll, plus there are numerous other beaches with different aspects. Indeed, the annual Mambo Surf Challenge is held at Merimbula and attracts competitors from around the country and abroad.
Merimbula is also a very popular fishing destination and provides for a diverse range of other activities such as tennis, golf, bowling, boating, swimming, canoeing, surfing, bushwalking, wind surfing and exploring.
Merimbula is a wildlife lover’s paradise, providing a haven for myriad native animals.
Whale watching is a major event in Merimbula from September to November each year, offering visitors the rare opportunity to see these magnificent creatures in the wild. Seals, penguins and dolphins also frequent the waters around Merimbula.
Each year on the June long weekend the Merimbula Jazz Festival, which has been running for over 20 years, attracts over 100 jazz bands.
Fresh local produce gives local restaurants a distinct flavour, with local seafood being a specialty in the Merimbula eateries. In particular, the region’s oysters are considered to be some of Australia’s finest.
Merimbula also has a wide range of cosmopolitan cafés and restaurants that line the esplanade. The town centre incorporates a huge range of retailers from large national supermarket and retail chains to boutiques and specialty stores.
